Pop is a mixed-use building located in Vila Madalena, facing the particular challenge of connecting two streets with a height difference of approximately 18 meters. This significant elevation difference makes the building stand out from its immediate surroundings, offering great views and visibility on one hand, while on the other, causing its volume to protrude aggressively into the local landscape.
The proposed design aims to make the most of the views while softening the building’s impact on its neighborhood. This softening is achieved through the fragmentation of its volume, resulting in the building being composed of articulated and stacked blocks, with the main access occurring at the upper level of the site—specifically, between the two main blocks. At this level, communal spaces are arranged, including an entrance plaza, a swimming pool, a multipurpose room, and a store open to Rua Madalena. At the lower level of the site, there is a secondary entrance associated with a generous double-height space open to Sua Simpatia, intended for commercial use.
The building comprises 30 apartments, six of which are two-story units, all equipped with infrastructure to allow great flexibility in defining their internal spaces.
The building’s structure, made of reinforced concrete, follows a simple and rational grid, with the edges of the slabs extending in a subtle cantilever. This framework allows for considerable freedom of use, which is reflected in both the flexibility of the internal spaces and the diversity of compositions on its façade, characterized by its colorful sliding panels. From this structural grid, the building was constructed using a dry assembly method, extensively utilizing prefabricated and industrialized materials.
